Kids get sick — we all know this. It’s going to happen as their immune systems are growing and getting them ready for the rest of their lives. But something I hadn’t considered is that parents treat the situation of their child getting sick completely different!
In the past couple months we’ve been on both sides of the sick coin. Odin caught something from a play date and then at a different time, gave a buddy a bug. Both times sucked but we got through it and he’s healthy. However, navigating these situations with other parents was definitely a learning curve!
Patient Zero
When Odin caught something, my friend was so forward with information and I knew she felt awful that it happened. I wasn’t worried at all — it happens! But I was stressed for her to know how much we weren’t upset with the situation. THEN on the flip side, when Odin was the dreaded patient zero with a bug, I was freaking out and feeling awful he got his pal sick….even though I hadn’t a clue he was carrying any type of illness at the time.
Looking back, it all seems a little ridiculous to have worried so much…but then again, you never know how other people see certain obstacles in child rearing.
We all wear parenthood differently which is to be expected as we all have our own individual experiences. Something that may seem simple to you may seem insurmountable to someone else and vice versa. What I learned in the situation is that sharing knowledge and having patience with, not only your friends and family, but also yourself, is necessary! You’d think I would have been more worried about my sick kiddo, but I was so stressed that my mama friends were all good!
Just another step in learning how this all works, and the best way for me to move forward as a mom and a friend to other moms!
